Following our brief earlier coverage of the phone set to challenge the Credit Crunch, we’re very excited to have the first artist’s impression of this new handset, codenamed the 100-F from a Latvian manufacturer, new to the mobile phone market, called Lirpa. It seems bizarre, but the phone design has been inspired by the global credit crunch (which must have reached Latvia too), and works as either a coin-operated or credit/debit card mobile. The UK variant will have a £1 coin slot for calls and a 10p slot for texts (not a bad price for a PAYG text) as well as a card slot (for which you’ll need to enter your PIN). It sounds like it will be quite bulky, maybe comparable with some of the smartphones around, and features will be limited - no camera or MP3 player as the components would take up too much valuable coin space.
Here are some of the 100-F features:
Colour screen - No
Bluetooth - No
Weight - 110g empty, 400g full
Available colours - Midnight Black, Dirty Grey and Grey Black
Card slot - Visa, Mastercard, Electron
Messaging - SMS, MMS, IOU
Ringtones - Built-in, Vibrate, JangleThe idea behind this phone is obviously to make you think about how much you spend on calls, and we understand there’s another twist on this - users will be able to opt for having no access to the coin box, in which case they will have to take the phone to one of their network provider’s shops to have it emptied. None of the UK networks have commented on this as yet.

At this stage the details we have are vague but we have had word that an ingenious new phone, developed with the failing economy in mind, has been approved from conceptual artwork, to go ahead for manufacture and distribution. We do know that the phone is designed with integrated money saving features that we are intrigued to learn more about, as costs are normally controlled by the networks.
We’ve been promised some more exclusive information plus pictures, which we will be sure to share with you as soon as we get it.

You knew it had to happen - the Voice-over-IP (VoIP) application Skype has come to the iPhone, creating the ultimate in zen hardware. Because when a smartphone can call without the phone, you don’t have a phone anymore - it’s just smart. You can even use it with an iPod touch, as long as you have a mic.
The official Skype app doesn’t suffer from the echoes inflicted on earlier homebrews by audio workarounds. It’ll only work with wifi, so you can’t Edge your way around phone bills, but for many of the techno-capable this could be the end of old-school charges. If you’re in a wireless area and have Skype equipped friends, you can talk for free.
Apart from your regular service fees, of course. And the data plan. And the WiFi fee if have to sign up for a network. And the cost of a new iPhone when the next generation comes out, of course. And you’ll still have to pay to phone all those Skype-less troglodytes you know. Alas, the future is here - but your friends aren’t ready for it.

Windows Mobile is still a while away from release, however Microsoft are making sure we don’t forget all about it by providing a few new details. First, existing Windows Mobile users with phones running 128MB of RAM and a hefty 400Mhz processor will theoretically be able to upgrade to the new version, however it’ll be down to your phone’s manufacturer to make it happen.
Secondly, more than 25 companies are expected to announce their involvement with 6.5 and the new Windows Marketplace application store at the CTIA Wireless show in Las Vegas, which runs over the first three days of April. These are said to include Facebook, MySpace, SlingMedia and EA Mobile. Microsoft have also announced there will be a 24-hour trial period for newly purchased applications, so users will simply be able to return the app if they don’t like it.
Although hardly a first for mobile phones, Microsoft have also recruited the Design Museum London and the Council of Fashion Designers of America to design unique themes for the new operating system, plus a Theme Generator will be available after the launch where one can change colours and make use of your own pictures as wallpaper.
All this and more is expected to be covered in detail this Thursday during CTIA, when Robbie Bach, President of Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft, takes to the stage. We’re getting more and more interested in 6.5’s development and are pleased it appears Microsoft are embracing the consumer side of their smartphone OS this time around.

I’ve been waiting for Skype on iPhone for at least a year… I’m a Truphone user, but I’m not happy with it, it doesn’t work very well in terms of call quality. I hope the official version would be as good as the desktop application.

Two colors will be available at launch: "Touch of Copper" and "Cobalt Metal." The Instinct S30 will be available on April 19th for $129.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate.

31MarThough the technology eyes are centered on CTIA at the moment, being the BlackBerry addict that I am, I have to wonder what RIM has in store at WES 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Based on rumors circulating around the web, several things could be announced:
- BlackBerry Curve 8900 for AT&T. Those that are using unlocked 8900's on the carrier have reported that AT&T service books are appearing on their devices, making it almost certain that their version of the phone is on the way.
- BlackBerry "Niagra" 9630. We've reported on it several times, and it is quite possibly the biggest rumor surrounding WES 2009. According to various sources, the device is expected to land on Canadian CDMA carriers in late May/early June, and will arrive in the states in June/July. Oddly enough, the hype of the device launch in the US centers around Verizon; no one seems to be talking about a launch on Sprint.
- BES 5.0 and OS 5.0. Covered in several blogs on the internet, both could be announced during the convention.
- Testing of LTE devices. Potentially embarrassed by the launch of the Bold as 3G begins to be replaced by LTE, select devices may be announced that show RIM's commitment to the 4G standard.
- Devices with 1GHz processors. Rumors are circulating that RIM will launch one or two devices with 1GHz processors within the next 9-12 months.

31MarReuters reports that Microsoft is showing some headway with its upcoming Windows Marketplace for Mobile. The company announced partnerships with Pandora, Facebook and the game wizards at Electronic Arts, among others, and will go ahead with plans to preview a demo version of the software store this week at CTIA.
(BTW, Noah's flight to Las Vegas has landed and by now, he's probably unpacking his vid cam and gear, so check back soon for all the cool show coverage you've come to expect from the Krav.)
When it comes to application marketplaces, you really can't talk about them without mentioning Apple. By now, everyone knows that its real innovation wasn't the iPhone, but its App Store. The 25,000+ software distribution point has spawned tons of imitators across different platforms, from the Android Marketplace to the upcoming Blackberry and Pre cellphone software stores. (Speaking of Blackberry, handset manufacturer Research In Motion is going to launch its own App World at CTIA as well.)
While Microsoft may not be leading the pack here, at least signs look good that it's committed to creating a worthwhile experience for mobile end users. In addition to Pandora and the others mentioned above, look for Gameloft SA, Accuweather.com and MySpace to get in on the act. The company also expects many of its existing cellphone software partners (of which there are roughly 20,000) to submit stuff as well. Talk about an embarrassment of riches: That's potentially a mountain of applications, and the marketplace hasn't even launched yet. (If all goes according to plan, the store should have its grand opening in the second half of the year.)
Here are some other interesting nuggets from the Reuters article:
- The store will work with WinMo 6.5, which is also slated for release later this year.
- LG's WinMo phones released at that time will have MySpace preloaded.
- Microsoft will announce an alliance with fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, who will create customizable phone themes.
- The company's planning on enticing carriers by splitting the software revenue with them (after 70% goes to the developers) and enabling them to have their own stores within the marketplace.

According to an article published in BusinessWeek, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis is expected to launch the BlackBerry App World during his CTIA keynote in Las Vegas on April 1st. Thanks to the wide-reaching success of Apple's App Store, RIM, Nokia, Microsoft, and others are quickly catching on to what could easily become a profitable segment of their business model. RIM is no stranger to the application front having worked with software developers since 2002, however this will mark the first time that all programs are available in one centralized location.
In the growing battle to launch application storefronts, App World will feature downloadable programs starting at $2.99 - pricier than Apple's .99 entry level, but also high enough to dissuade programmers from creating useless applications. They're also fighting for developers; RIM is taking a 20 percent cut of the software sales, whereas Apple requires 30 percent in order to list in their App Store. "There's going to be a significant counter-challenge to Apple," said Mike McGuire, an analyst with Gartner."
Regardless, RIM has a challenge before them, as Apple's App Store offers 25,000 software programs of all shapes and sizes. The average iPhone owner has downloaded 20 applications - significantly higher than on any other device. In order for RIM to compete, they must make the experience as smooth as Apple's operation, according to Mark Woolen, an Oracle vice-president. "It's just very, very elegant," he said.Tags: blog, cell phone news, discussion, mobile
