Any of you that are familiar with what's going on in Apple's AppStore with the thousands of games available and the extremely competitive pricing problems might be intrigued to hear about a new strategy used by 5 independent iPhone game developers to try to raise awareness (and sales) of their games in the AppStore.

Majic Jungle Software, Veiled Games, Antair Games, IMS and Warhorse Games have gotten together to launch The 5 Fingers Games Bundle that includes 5 games, one from each developer, all for $5.

Per the press release, this is the first games bundle for the iPhone, but the real story here is the way in which it came about. Often for a games bundle, a publisher pulls together one or two good titles and pads them out with some weaker games, but this bundle includes the best selling game from each of five developers. The 5 games included in the bundle are:

    * Chopper - Previously a #1 game on the App Store
    * Up There - The most emotive game on the store
    * Sneezies - An adorable puzzle game for all ages
    * BurnBall - Addicting and high energy arcade action
    * BlackBeards Assault - Puzzle adventure on the High Seas

If you purchased these games separately today, it would cost you $11. (Each game is $1.99 except Chopper is $2.99) All of these games are good and this is a phenomenal value for $5.

I think it's really cool watching all these creative minds come up with different strategies to compete in this new marketplace. I'm going to try to reach out to these guys in a few weeks to see how it's going. In the meantime, if you're interested, you can buy it now on iTunes by clicking here.

The U.S. now leads the world in mobile web browsing, accounting for 29% of global traffic, according to new data issued by mobile web solutions provider Bango.

In all, Bango's February 2009 data identifies mobile web users spanning 208 different countries and 1,811 different handsets. While Bango cites the publicity surrounding Apple's iPhone as a catalyst behind mobile web uptake in markets like the U.S. and the U.K., the firm credits the absence of fixed-line broadband and PCs for growth in regions such as India, South Africa, Indonesia and Egypt, where mobile devices are often users' sole point of access to the Internet.

Bango adds that the growth of mobile web traffic is matched by an increase in users paying for premium mobile content, adding that the U.S. now represents 57% of mobile payments worldwide.

“With 245 million subscribers, it was only a matter of time before the US became the number 1 country in the world for mobile web browsing,” said Anil Malhotra, SVP of Marketing at Bango. “When it comes to payments though, the US is accelerating faster than any other country and now accounts for 57% of payments worldwide.”

The statistics also show that while some countries such as India and Indonesia have a good appetite for browsing on their mobiles, it doesn’t always convert into purchases. In fact, only five countries in the Top 10 browsing chart are also in the Top 10 payments chart – USA, UK, Portugal, South Africa and Spain. According to Bango, browsing rates are only converted into high purchase rates in markets where users enjoy significant disposable income and can pay for premium content via their phone bills.

Nokia has remained the number one make of smartphones, but their dominance may be slipping. For right now, though, Nokia remains squarely in the lead.

According to the research firm, Nokia sold 60.9 million smartphones last year for a total market share of 43.7 percent. That’s more than double the market share of its closest competitor, Research In Motion, which commanded 16.6 percent.

The rest of the report on Nokia was mixed. The company faces continuing and substantial competition in all of their markets, as well as intense downward pressure on their margins. Like all cell phone makers, they’re also susceptible to the fickle nature of cell phone enthusiasts. If one or more of their most popular phones were to lose popularity, it could cause major headaches for the company.

Right now Nokia remains strong, but must meet their challenges head on.

According to our friends at TmoNews they are keeping the rumor mill going with the following post:

The guy over at BoyGenius are going out on a limb here and saying, the T-mobile G2 WILL launch at CTIA. Basing this on no facts, tips, tricks or ninjas we're going to chalk this up firmly into the rumor category. While we trust in the idea of a bloggers intuition, we don't want to spiral any rumor into fact and get the hopes up of many expecting to see the G2 at CTIA and then raising holy hell when they don't. So for now, strictly and firmly in the rumor category that BoyGenius is calling for the G2 launch at CTIA this April. Mind you they are saying launch, NOT release so they could be right on an announcement and we could still wait for some time before availability for purchase. Still, if its true, you heard it at BGR first.

If you saw Noah's post about the iPhone 3.0 update being unveiled next week, you know there's some goodness in the works for iPhone users.

Nothing's been confirmed yet about what that goodness will look like, and the rumor mill's been pretty quiet lately. But there have been at least a few ideas floating around, so here's a short roundup of the rumors, theories and guesses (educated and not) thus far.

Let me know in the comments if I left anything out:
    • Gizmodo wonders if the actual launch of 3.0 will coincide with a rumored touchscreen tablet that's based on the iPhone.

    • CNET thinks that Apple might have a "universal search capability" up its sleeve. (Right now, you can't search your whole phone from the main screen.)

    • MacNN today pointed to a month-old post from Electronista, which posited that the new release could include true background processes, rather than push notification. The latter was promised in the iPhone 2.1, but it never materialized. (Actually, I covered this back in February, too, so I'm particularly interested to see if this pans out.) Notably, vector-based GPS also showed up in early betas of iPhone 2.1, which would've come close to real turn-by-turn navigation. Was it waylaid for this release?

    • According to Boy Genius Report, the 3.0 update and a new SDK will be released (which would likely change the terms of the existing agreement). It also claims to have word that there will finally be MMS support, as well as tethering between the iPhone and a laptop via Bluetooth and USB.

    • Brighthand isn't guessing this time about what's in store. Rather, it's just summing up long-awaited features, like Flash. (It still notably and mistakenly thinks Flash for iPhone is being developed through an Adobe/Apple collaboration. I suppose it's anyone's guess now, but Adobe has certainly done its best to deny the rumor.) The site also reminds readers about the possible hardware update that may happen this June/July. If the next version of the iPhone handset actually does launch this summer, then based on past experience, Brighthand predicts it will debut with the 3.0 software on it, and that the current phone will get another software update shortly afterward.

    • And pretty much everyone thinks it would be foolishness for Apple not to address users' top wish-list item: cut and paste.

Remember, March 17 marks only the advance preview of the 3.0 update, not the actual release date. And chances are slim that Apple will offer a sneak peek at the next-gen iPhone handset (if indeed there is one) at this event — though I'd be ridiculously thrilled to be proved wrong.
