10JunAfter a successful launch weekend that saw 50,000 to 100,000 Palm Pre's sold (depending on the report), Jon Rubinstein will be replacing Ed Colligan as Chief Executive Officer, effective June 12th. Often referred to as the "Prefather," Rubinstein left Apple for Palm in 2006 and was highly influential in the development of the Pre and the webOS platform. During his tenure with Apple, he helped develop the all-in-one iMac and the iPod. In an interview a short time ago, Rubinstein discussed how his time at Apple affected his decisions at Palm, noting that "Palm's engineering culture has a lot of how Apple runs instilled into it." The full press release regarding the leadership change is below.
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jun 10, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced that its board of directors has appointed Jon Rubinstein to lead the company as Chairman and CEO upon the departure of Ed Colligan, who is stepping down after sixteen years of leadership at the company. Rubinstein, who joined Palm as Executive Chairman in October 2007 to help bring innovation back to the company, assumes his role as CEO on June 12. Colligan plans to take some time off, then join Elevation Partners.

"I am very excited about taking on this expanded role at Palm," said Rubinstein. "Ed and I have worked very hard together the past two years, and I'm grateful to him for everything he's done to help set the company up for success. With Palm webOS we have ten-plus years of innovation ahead of us, and the Palm Pre is already one of the year's hottest new products. Due in no small part to Ed's courageous leadership, we're in great shape to get Palm back to continuous growth, and we plan to keep the trajectory going upward."
"I'm very proud of what Palm has accomplished so far," said Colligan. "We pioneered two major product categories and I believe we are on our way to defining the standard for the mobile web. I'm extremely proud of our team, and grateful to have played a role in turning Palm around. I know that Jon, the Board and the Palm executive team will do an incredible job driving Palm to new heights."

At WWDC, Apple seemed to be oddly secretive about the specifications of the new iPhone 3GS, simply claiming that it ran "twice as fast" as the 3G and original devices. Thanks to an unintended website posting by T-Mobile Netherlands, the full details are up for all to see. According to the information, the device offers a 600 MHz processor and 256 MB of RAM - an increase from the 412 MHz processor and 128 MB of RAM found in the last two devices. In addition, the 3GS sports the new PowerVR SGX graphics chip, which supports OpenGL ES 2.0.
Why Apple didn't come out and admit the specifications is beyond us, but at least we have some concrete data. A screenshot from T-Mobile Netherlands website is below.

Not to be outdone by the larger, national carriers, US Cellular plans to launch the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8230 and Samsung Code later in the month. Though they're not available on the website as of yet, a hard working BGR reader was able to sneak around and find the fact cards on the devices. It's not much, and pricing is still unknown, but it's a start and should please those that want the devices (especially considering that the launch is right around the corner).

Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) today announced the launch of Broadband2Go, a 3G nationwide wireless Internet service without an annual contract, monthly subscription or activation fee.
Operating on the Sprint Nationwide Network and developed in conjunction with Novatel Wireless (NASDAQ: NVTL), the MC760 Broadband2Go device carries the distinction of being the world's smallest EV-DO Rev. A modem.
"Forget the long-term contracts, monthly bills or desperately seeking a local coffee shop for Wi-Fi. Prepaid mobile broadband is ideal for students, families on the go, freelancers, anyone who needs wireless Internet access...and wants to pay only when they use it," said Bob Stohrer, CMO, Virgin Mobile USA. "We've already demonstrated the benefit of no annual contracts and the ability to tailor spending to individual needs. Broadband2Go is another way to give consumers value, flexibility and convenience."
Like Virgin Mobile USA's mobile phone service, activation is simple and megabytes can be added as often as needed with credit/debit cards or Virgin Mobile Top-Up cards. Top-Up cards can be used to purchase data usage from 100MB to 1 gigabyte on the pay-as-you-go model. A new Broadband2Go-branded Top-Up card for $20, which customers may use to purchase 250MB good for 30 days, translating roughly into 12 hours of web browsing. Other data plans are available at $10, $40 and $60, and any VMU Top-Up card can be used.
Virgin Mobile USA's Broadband2Go requires no activation fee and there are no roaming charges. Customers have a real-time usage meter to monitor and check "Remaining Megabytes of Use" at any time. From the Broadband2Go My Account page, customers are provided with approximate estimates for how many hours of web-browsing, video-viewing and number of emails each plan will generally handle.
The package will be available exclusively at Best Buy Mobile starting in late June for $149.99, and is the first prepaid broadband product Best Buy Mobile is offering.Tags: blog, cell phone news, discussion, mobile

10JunHead to head to head to head: Torrent Droid, Torrent-fu, Transdroid, and BarTor. This isn't a full-blown review of any of these apps; just a quick demonstration to see which ones are worth your time. Here's a hint: save your money and go for the freebies.
The hardest part of using these apps is getting the settings right - like port forwarding. Someone aligned with Torrent Droid has provided a great wiki, which includes setting up a free domain for your IP with no-ip.com (i.e., username.redirectme.net). The Torrent Droid's home site, Zerofate, is down at the time of this writing. Looks like their service is basically dead as well. Well, Alec Holmes, thanks for starting something great.

One day after images of the Virgin Mobile broadband aircard hit the internet, the company has formally launched their internet service, coined as Broadband2Go. Sporting 3G connectivity sans contract, it will launch exclusively in Best Buy Mobile locations in late June for $149.99 with four price plans: 100 MB for $10 (expires in 10 days), 250 MB for $20 (expires in 30 days), 600 MB for $30 (expires in 30 days), and 1 GB for $60 (expires in 30 days).
Though the plans are pricey compared to postpaid carriers, the Virgin Mobile option is ideal for those that need broadband internet on a limited basis and don't want to spend the $720 that the average carrier charges yearly.
