We have a 999 number because, as a successful society, we want to save people from violence and disaster. But if we want to stay successful the emergency services should block people who make calls like this - because if we save them in the future, we’re just getting in Darwin’s way.
1. Non-floppy rabbit ears
A Scottish woman dialed 999 to report that a rabbit she’d just bought didn’t have floppy ears, perhaps mistaking “Emergency services who race to save lives” for “Irrelevant trivia service Facebook.”
We chose “999″ as the emergency number because it was the fastest number to find on the old rotary phones, after 0 (which was already taken by the operator). It’s designed to save you having to flip through the phone book while your house burns down. When you’re looking for “rabbit cosmetic surgery”, you have loads of time to search for the number - and you’ll need it, because rabbit cosmetic surgeons aren’t in the phone book, or in reality, or even in the minds of sane people.
How this could have been an emergency: It actually was, she just asked for the wrong service - she should have asked for an ambulance. Specifically, an ambulance fitted out for especially crazy people who consider (more…)

Devices that we have already announced but that still come out after Hero will not necessarily be a part of this change.” said an HTC spokesman - thereby making the dreams of millions plagued by extremely clunky mini-USB adapters come true.
The lack of a real audio port, necessitating awkward USB headphones or even awkwarder extra components, has been a stain on otherwise extremely slick HTC handsets for years. Now we can celebrate how, after only a few billion complaints, they’ve finally realised what people want.

The video is polished and professional, and the phone itself very impressive, making it very difficult to imagine this has been cooked up by an undeniably talented fanboy. The handset itself looks different to any other touchscreen phone in that it’s long and thin, with the screen measuring 4″ and displaying a resolution of (more…)

An iPhone running Windows 95? Define "running." As you can see, most of the play is going on in an emulator on a computer that is no doubt outfitted with a processor more powerful and RAM more plentiful than several iPhones put together. Still, you can see the OS barely getting by on the phone itself. I'm not sure what this is worth outside of causing a few, "Oh snap! Look what they did!" reactions. But I think the vid does a good job of inducing those. The team is still awaiting a 3G S, which should bump performance considerably.
