Kevin from CrackBerry just posted a hands-on video with an early version of Verizon's forthcoming BlackBerry Storm 9550 - aka Storm 2. That SurePress clickable screen is still there, but Kev says it's much better than the first iteration. This early model runs more or less the same software as the current Storm, but has more memory and the overall hardware is "much nicer," as well. There are lags and kinks and bugs to be ironed out before launch, for sure, but maybe there's still hope for an all-touch BlackBerry that's actually usable.

With its introduction of the Snap for Sprint and very similar Ozone for Verizon, HTC is undoubtedly taking aim at the likes of RIM’s successful BlackBerry Curve. The Windows Mobile device perhaps isn’t quite as sleek or feature laden as some of the competition, but certainly answers its calling as a powerful email and messaging device complete with HTC’s simple yet innovative Inner Circle email prioritizing feature.

Today I got the chance to play around with the red-orange “Fire” version (also comes in a bluish “Ice”) of the Samsung Highlight, and can happily report that not only did I not get burned, but I was actually quite impressed with this entry-level resistive touch screen device. The Highlight has plenty to offer, including a [...]

If it looks like a BlackBerry and smells like a BlackBerry, chances are it’s a BlackBerry.  But the BlackBerry Pearl Flip arguably doesn’t look or smell anything like a traditional BlackBerry.  While the Pearl Flip has all the functionality of its candy bar siblings, its clamshell design makes it a unique addition to the BlackBerry [...]

The T-Mobile Dash has been a fixture in the carrier’s smartphone landscape since late 2006. After years of dedicated service, the Windows Mobile device can finally pass the torch to a new generation. Meet the thin and sleek T-Mobile HTC Dash 3G. The Dash 3G boasts a host of advanced features, of course among them, as its name suggests, support for T-Mobile’s 3G network. With the Dash 3G, HTC has squarely taken aim at BlackBerry’s Curve lineup.

Use The Force. Or the App Store. Either way, you can get some saber-/sword-fighting action happening right quick.

iSamurai Bluetooth is a game app that lets players use their handsets for imaginary swordplay, complete with steel-on-steel sound effects when the phones are in close proximity. Holding their iPhones/iPod Touches, users can strike or block, with the devices clanging every time the "swords" meet.

Gameplay is reminiscent of the Nintendo Wii, since iSamurai uses the iPhone's built-in motion sensor to render Wiimote-like functionality.  Until recently the handsets communicated over Wifi, but the latest version works over Bluetooth, which means users can relive their Star Wars or Lord of the Rings fantasy fight sequences wherever the mood strikes.

"Using the iPhone's new Bluetooth capabilities, developers can now make multiplayer games that don't need a Wi-Fi connection," said Robert Hogg, CEO and founder of Toy Kite Software. "And with iSamurai that means gamers can have a real life sword fight at the park, in line at the movies, or anywhere!"

Be warned that the app is only for the steadiest of hands. (Being a butter-fingers, I'd probably lose my grasp and send my phone hurdling into a brick wall or something.)

It's either totally dorky or a hand-slapping-forehead kind of genius — I'm not sure. Either way, the iSamurai app does herald the beginning of something unique and interesting — true multi-player, face-to-face game interaction on a cell phone. It's another step on the road to the iPhone becoming a real gaming device.

Here's a vid of the app in action, Mortal Kombat style.

iSamurai Bluetooth costs 99 cents. There's also a free, limited version available via the App Store. (Not compatible with 1st generation iPod Touches.)

The problem with this industry is that I get wind of some new phone that's months from release, I get all excited about it, and then just days before I actually get the thing in my hands something else that's months away from release itself comes along to steal all of my gadgetlust away. To wit: I'm due to get the HTC Hero from John in a few days, and now Expansys UK has gone and listed Sony Ericsson's Xperia X3 on their Coming Soon pages. I still want to get Hero in my hands, don't get me wrong. But now I'm wondering if X3 - aka Rachael - is really the girl for me.

Last week I posted about a video showing off what was claimed to be X3's custom Android user interface. Sexy. Totally sexy. Now Slashgear (amongst other blogs) has uncovered specs and details of the device via the online retailer's product pages. No price, no ship date, but lots of juicy details made all the more intriguing by rumors that X3 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset:

    • 4" touch-sensitive display @ 800 x 480 pixels
    • Custom "3D" user interface running atop Android OS
    • Quad-Band GSM with HSPA, WiFi, aGPS, and Bluetooth 2.1
    • 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash
    • VGA video capture @30 fps
    • miniUSB port and 3.5mm AV jack
    • microSD card slot with SDHC support

    Drool, drool, drool, drool, drool.

SE is dropping a major handset in the form of an Android-powered XPERIA. The specs are top-of-the-line, and as you'll see in the video below, the Rachael interface is to die for. I've opted for the instant gratification of a visual geekporn dump in this post, but click on through to the Expansys pre-sale page for full specs.

I think at this stage in the leak process, it would be nice to see a video of Motorola's Morrison phone actually running Android. But a pic is nice. You can see subtle differences here from the first hi-res image we saw, and I kinda miss the white frame. But of course the significant change here is visual evidence of the device running Google's OS. It's still outfitted with a grid QWERTY, which I can't condone. But it will fill a younger messaging demo in T-Mo's Android line-up. At least that better be who Moto is shooting for here. Pitting this thing up against a phone like Hero could cause it, as one Gizmodo writer put it, to get murdered to death.

This one's so wacky it kinda makes sense.

Last week I went to a media breakfast with folks from Google and T-Mobile, during which they talked about the forthcoming myTouch 3G Android device almost like it was a very souped-up feature phone as much as a tricked out smartphone. They also made repeated reference to it as T-Mo's flagship phone for the rest of 2009, at least.

Now comes word from TmoNews that T-Mo and HTC (makers of the myTouch and G1) may be hard at work on a true "Android feature phone," so to speak: The HTC Click. David over at TmoNews reports on a source who flapped her (his?) gums awhile about a small little Android phone that the two companies hope to release later this year at a retail price of just $99. That two-digit price, coupled with a purported cute little form factor, sounds ridiculous for a smartphone before you consider one factor: Smartphones are the new feature phones. And Google wants Android to be the smartphone platform for the masses.

Details? Sure. Bear in mind these are just way-out rumors at this point:

      • $99 Price Point
      • Form factor "smaller than Samsung Highlight"
      • Snap-on faceplates
      • Resistive touch display
      • myTouch 3G will remain the flagship T-Mo Android phone
      More over at TmoNews
