What do tech writers do in their spare time? Talk tech, of course! After taping this week's Bay Sunday at the CBS 5 studios in downtown San Francisco, Noah dropped by his favorite coffee spot and met up with Mike from VSC Consulting PR and Carlos, a local vlogger, tech head, and PhoneDog fan. They talked videos, twitter, and about Noah's "style," and Carlos captured the chit-chat on camera, for better or for worse.

Moto's getting ready to blur the lines between an Android experience and a Motorola experience, and I can't wait to see the results. BGR is reporting that the plans for Blur include a sexy mask with lots of social networking hooks - much like HTC's Sense. The image below has nothing to do with Blur, really, but it's what everybody's hitching to this story so... why not?

Motorola's banking heavily on Android to resurrect the lumbering beast that is their cellular division, and a distinct identity could go a long way in accomplishing that goal, which won't be easy (but nothing ih-is). It would be great to see a video leak of the UI, Motorola. I'm waiting impatiently. I'm pins and I'm needles. Yeah, YEAH!

Well this one is straight out of my dreams... or nightmares. Two days after ordering the myTouch, this image pops up from LeakDroid that shows an HTC support page for the Hero on T-Mobile USA. Checking HTC's support menus now, I don't see the product entry, and it doesn't help that the URI was cropped from the screen grab. Still, it is tantalizing, isn't it?

T-Mo USA has emphatically stated that Hero would not come from them. Then again, would they say so if it was? It could result in a lot of wasted promotional funds. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy to be getting a myTouch, but if I had the choice of a Hero, things would be different. Here's to the hope that this is real.

EDIT: Yarg, it was fun while it lasted, but HTC has assured MobileCrunch that this image is 'Shopped.

Despite it being holiday month, we’re still here to bring ten of the mobile phone related news stories you may have missed this week, starting with a green Samsung that’s, um, green.

    1.  Samsung Launch Bio-degradable Reclaim.

Samsung Reclaim Biodegradable PhoneThe Samsung Reclaim is being launched in the USA and although it’s a basic QWERTY slider with a 2 megapixel camera, the phone is built from 80% bio-degradable materials, with 40% of the handsets construction coming from corn-derived bio-plastics.  It also beeps to let you know when the battery is fully charged, so you don’t consume more power than needed.

    2.  Symbian^4 Set to Annoy Developers.

The next version of Symbian looks likely to break compatibility with devices running S60, forcing developers to re-write existing code to ensure smooth running on Symbian^4, due sometime in 2011.  This interesting interview with David Wood tells more.

    3.  Vodafone Shun T-Mobile Purchase.

Ever since Deutsche Telekom hinted it would be pleased to be rid of T-Mobile, Vodafone have been listed as an interested party, however their shareholders stated they would prefer Vodafone didn’t borrow in order to purchase the network, despite the fact an amalgamation would create the UK’s (more…)

Samsung Galaxy i7500At first it was hoped Samsung’s first Android phone would be on sale in the UK during June, but at the beginning of July this date was pushed forward to the second week of August, which we hope remains accurate.  Coming at the same time as this adjusted release date was the news that O2 would be the UK operator flying the Galaxy flag.

All the initial photos of the i7500 showed a model in black, but now we have some leaked images showing a very fetching white version, a colour which seems to suit Android phones rather well.  So what have we got to look forward to in this Samsung offering?  Aside from the Cupcake Android OS, it has a 5 megapixel camera, 3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA and HSUPA, Wi-Fi, GPS, 8GB internal memory and a 320×480 AMOLED touchscreen.

Although the design is very HTC-like, the Galaxy’s specification is mouth-watering, especially the capacitive AMOLED toucshcreen!  Will it be released next week?  It’s not long to go until we find out!

The First Phone with Welsh - Samsung S5600Welsh is spoken by approximately 725,000 people in England and Wales and although there are very few solely Welsh speakers, there are enough people who undoubtably prefer to express themselves in their native tongue.  Seeing as phone manufacturers need to adapt keyboards and add language packs for many European dialects, it makes sense to add Welsh to the list!

Samsung are the company in question and from the 1st September the S5600 will contain a library of 44,000 Welsh words to make texting somewhat easier than using an English only T9 system!  Also known as the Preston - Samsung should have nicknamed it the Swansea, as Preston is not in Wales - the S5600 is a 3G phone with HSDPA, a 3.2 megapixel camera, the TouchWiz interface, expandable memory and A2DP Bluetooth v2.1.  Even without the Welsh language add-on, the S5600 is a great touchscreen phone available at a competitive price.

This isn’t the first time Samsung have identified a niche language market in need of filling, as last year they were the first to add Gaeilge - the Irish language - to a mobile phone, in this case the Tocco.  It will be interesting to see the sales figures of the S5600 in Wales at the start of next year to see exactly how well this new function has been received.

In the very near future, PhoneDog will be launching a sub-site dedicated to Android. We'll still have all of the big, Android-related industry news here at the main site, but we know the hard-core enthusiasts want a little something extra - our own site, our own YouTube channel, our own forums.

More hack/mod coverage, more app reviews, more Android rumors, and more fake phone image-dump geek porn are headed your way. And I expect plenty to be coming back from you in the form of comments, questions, content suggestions, and forum participation. I'll be taking emails, texts, and maybe facilitating a few other mechanisms that make it easy for you to get in touch.

The address is DroidDog.com, and while there's nothing but a simple graphic to greet you at the moment, folks are hard at work behind the scenes to provide the coolest Android indulgence site on the net. But we're missing one thing: we need you to design the DroidDog logo.

There are some minor restrictions. For example, the image should look good in a 200 x 110 px space and be white at the edges. We'd also like to be able to blow it up, so it should look good at higher resolutions. Whether you want to provide a vector, a high-res jpg, or something else is up to you.

You choose the colors, you choose the theme, and you choose the style. Whether you want to go flat and bold or flashy/reflecty is up to you. Just don't time-stamp your work too hard. We'll narrow down the entries and post them at PhoneDog for all of you to vote on. We'll choose the logo from the three that receive the most votes. The winner gets $250 and a notch in their online portfolio.

Send as many as you want of your own, original entries to phonedog at gmail.com, but ask your questions here in the comments for the benefit of all of our readers. Thank you, and good luck! I can't wait to fire this thing up!

    _________________________________________

EDIT: The deadline is August 10th at 11:59 PM PST!

Neither ".com" or "DroidDog" are required to appear in the logo.

Thanks to SydneyA for the following information:

"FYI - I checked out the Android website to make sure of brand guidelines and found that you can use the Android robot for any commercial use (and it can be modified) but you CANNOT use the Android word itself as it appears in the logo and you CANNOT use the font that is used in the Android logo.

It doesn't take the award for design, nor does it win many points in the luxury category, but the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is, without a doubt, the scrappiest device in RIM's lineup.  With a shell that looks like it would withstand several drops to the floor (don't try) and an all-new trackpad, the 8520 seems to appeal to first-time BlackBerry buyers and those who need a durable phone.  And I completely understand what they mean.  As of late, most of the BlackBerry devices (think Bold, Tour, and Curve 8900) offer gorgeous displays and fantastic keyboards, but it comes at the expense of the device being less durable.  The 8520, though somewhat rickety in areas, seems to fill a void in RIM's product line.  Will it close the gap while providing the ever-so-popular BlackBerry experience?

Coming from someone who has always wanted a BlackBerry with a completely black housing, the exterior is, for the most part, aesthetically pleasing.  The single most distinguishing element of the 8520 versus previous BlackBerry devices is the back.  In a new design shift, the 8520 incorporates a rubberized texture on the top and top rear of the device, with media buttons (rewind, play/stop, and forward) replacing the lock and mute buttons on previous BlackBerry devices.  Much to the happiness of those frustrated with the position of the charging port on RIM's latest devices, it has returned to the top left side on the 8520, similar to that of the Curve and the Bold.

At the expense of durability and to preserve costs, the 8520 returns to the screen resolution seen on the Curve 8300 series devices.  It's not the greatest in terms of overall resolution, but it and the lack of 3G help in enhancing battery life.  The keyboard is a bit of a mixed bag.  Offering similar separated keys to those of the Curve 8300 series, the 8520's keyboard is a bit firmer, making it hard at times to type.  I did like the actual shape of the keys, as they're longer and narrower than the keys from the 8300.  Last but not least, the trackpad is a pleasure to use.  It was surprisingly easy to operate (though I'll admit, I'm still getting used to it).  I suppose it's similar to when RIM migrated from the thumbwheel to the trackball, but the migration to the trackpad from the trackball tripped me up every so often while testing the device.  Once I realize what I'm using, it's a breeze.

If you're considering the 8520, are a member of the BlackBerry family, or like to stay on top of the latest phone news, stay tuned for a full written review, video coverage, and a Bold/Tour/8520 square-off article!

It's the green phone ... or at least the "Greener" phone. Sprint's Reclaim from Samsung is made from bio-plastics and recycled packaging, but it actually has features. Noah heads to the garden to check it out!
