Since we can’t actively cover every news article that breaks (as much as we would love to), PhoneDog compiles various news announcements and press releases that have been published throughout the week and places them in one easy to read article known as "Tidbit Tuesday."  Enjoy!

    Palm Pixi specifications leaked
Since the announcement of the second Palm device to offer the webOS platform, many have wondered what was running under the hood.

    • Two ARM cores integrated into a single chip – a dedicated CPU core and a dedicated modem processor – for an unparalleled level of integration:
      • A 600MHz applications processor with floating point unit and L2 cache
      • A 400MHz modem processor
    • In addition to the two ARM cores, features 320MHz application DSP for multimedia supporting full 30 fps WVGA encode/decode, 200MHz hardware-accelerated 3D graphics core supporting OPEN GL 2.0, high-resolution camera, integrated GPS
    • Supports both CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Rev. A and UMTS HSDPA 7.2Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps, and GSM
    • 12mm x 12mm footprint
    • Optimized power consumption

To clarify, the Palm Pixi recently announced for Sprint is CDMA-only, though the above specifications mean that the chipset will easily support a GSM version of the device (which we're pretty sure will arrive at some point).  Via PreCentral

    Google introduces "Fast Flip" service
"One problem with reading news online today is that browsing can be really slow. A media-rich page loads dozens of files and can take as much as 10 seconds to load over broadband, which can be frustrating."  Sadly, Google's comment is true, as we're all so used to obtaining information as quickly as possible.  Enter "Fast Flip," a new service by Google Labs that allows iPhone and Android users to quickly browse the most popular news feeds on the internet.  According to Google, three dozen news organizations have collaborated in the project, including popular publications such as the New York Times and the Washington Post.  The project can be found at fastflip.googlelabs.comVia The Official Google Blog

Motorola's prerogative: Bring Android to everyone (or at least the national carriers)
Everybody's talkin' all this stuff about Motorola and the CLIQ, set to launch on T-Mobile later in the year - why don't they just let them live?  Corny Bobby Brown references aside, we didn't expect Motorola to contain their Android pursuit to just one carrier, and at an analyst conference, CEO Sanjay Jha confirmed our suspicions.  Stating that Motorola was "in talks with all large operators in the US," we'd be willing to guess that Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint are all entertaining discussions with Motorola representatives.  Considering that true Android availability is still limited to a small set of manufacturers, we're happy to hear the news.  Via Engadget Mobile

Sony Ericsson to change the way you listen to music?
Complete with a strange graphic of a kid chugging soda while rockin' his tunes, Sony Ericsson is set to announce a product designed to "see how the way you listen to music changes forever."  Depending on where you look, speculation centers around either a new wireless device or a pair of headphones - but at any rate, we'll know for sure when the company's webcast goes live at 11:00 AM GMT+1 on Monday, September 21st.

In this industry, it's all about rumors, and thanks to information obtained by PreCentral, webOS is in the spotlight today.  Reports of a paid App Catalog have been circulating for some time now, and thanks to a tipster, September 24th looks like the date to mark on the calendar.  Through the new option, you'll be able to give your credit card information to Palm directly, rather than individual vendors.  As if that wasn't good enough, tips are also pouring in about webOS 1.2 landing sometime next week (which, as I previously reported, was accidentally leaked - and subsequently pulled the same day).

From my standpoint, I see the entry of paid apps into the App Catalog as a positive sign of growth, but I'd love to hear from you - is it a sign of good things to come, or yet another way to dent your change purse?

HTC LeoHTC Touch HD and HTC Touch Pro 3HTC Leo

Having just announced the HTC Touch 2’s release another HTC handset is about to storm onto the scene. The HTC Leo, rumoured to be the Touch Pro 3. There has been a lot of speculation about the device in recent weeks, but now there are images to back it up.

This high end Windows Mobile device, sports a monstrous WVGA 4.3 inch touchscreen, as you can see HTC has decided to go fully touchscreen, with no QWERTY action in sight. The Leo features a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 320MB of RAM and 512 MB ROM. It runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 with some TouchFLO 3D technology thrown in for good measure.

The picture comparing the Leo to the HTC Touch HD shows the newer device to be a little thinner, but with the touchscreen dominating most of the front it is definitely larger. The inscription on the back reads “Touch Pro three” a clue to its real name perhaps?

Mobile FraudAccording to recent reports CIFAS (the Credit Industry Fraud Avoidance System) have more work than ever before, with confirmed cases of mobile phone fraud rising by three-quarters in the first half of this year.  As more mobile services become available, and the phones themselves carry more information, it’s possible to inflict far worse damage than a few prank calls - criminals can crib enough information to access your credit.  Brand new phones, free calls, online purchases, all this and more could be theirs.  The bills are still yours.  Avoid the problem with these simple steps.
    1.  Check Your Bills Carefully
They might arrive after work when the last thing you want to do is stare at more numbers, especially ones which say you owe money, but buried in the itemized bill is all the information you need to avoid rip-offs.  Not just ID-scamming crooks, but the “legal” businesses who’ll start charging you five pounds a month after you try out a “free” service - many exist entirely because most people don’t check their invoices.  They survive by harvesting the carelessness of users.  Don’t pay for what you don’t want.
    2.  Destroy Them More Carefully
Assuming you haven’t already upgraded to online billing, those paper statements of your account and bill?  They contain loads of information about your account and bill!  Crazy, right?  Make sure to shred (or more reasonably at least rip to little bits) before tossing them out.
    3.  Nobody Ever Needs Your Password
Sure, this is “Your starter for duh“, but it’s astonishing how many give out account information in hopes of faster service, free internet, or any number of other utopian electronic promises.

    LG GW620 Android

Although they have proclaimed much love for Windows Mobile, LG also promised three Android mobile phones before the year ended and today we have seen the first such device.  It’s named the Etna, or if you don’t know it very well, the more formal GW620.  Despite a wordy press release and the phone being on display at the recent IFA show, LG haven’t given much away in terms of features, but here’s what we do know:

    • A 3″ touchscreen displaying Google’s Android OS, which at this stage appears to be devoid of a flashy UI.
    • A slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
    • Further rumoured specifications include Wi-Fi, GPS and a 5 megapixel camera.
    • Press pictures seem to indicate a top-mounted 3.5mm jack plug socket too.

Of course, we can also expect the Etna to be a 3G phone with HSDPA support and the usual A2DP Bluetooth connectivity and MicroSD expandable storage.  LG expect to have the Etna ready for launch during Q4 this year, so it should be out very soon, however there is no word on pricing or whether it’ll be a network exclusive.

We’re a little unsure about the Etna.  Is it perhaps a little too understated?  With cool Android phones such as the HTC Hero on sale now, and the forthcoming Motorola DEXT capturing all the headlines, does the Etna have what it takes to compete, or is this first offering simply LG filling up its product range?  Let us know your opinion in the comments.
