    Palm Pre Plus

Reports are surfacing regarding the Palm Pre Plus' inability to use GPS in Google Maps.

Given Verizon's history when it comes to making VZ Navigator the mandatory GPS option, an original theory was that they locked it down.  This isn't likely, as late-model devices such as the DROID and Droid Eris have no issue utilizing Google Maps.  A reported fix included turning off Google Services, then power-cycling the GPS, though other reports found that a battery pull solved the issue.  The rumored problem seems to center around the GPS unit going to sleep to preserve battery life.

What's more, customers are reporting that the GPS is often inaccurate, with results coming in at up to a half mile away from the actual location.  I'm sure that's frustrating for Pre Plus owners - I can just imagine the comments.  "Sorry honey, I was trying to get to the place you wanted me to go, but I ended up in a field!"

I've reached out to Verizon and haven't heard anything just yet - as soon as I do, I'll post an update here.  Palm Pre Plus owners, how's your GPS treating you?  Let us know in the comments!

I was frustrated when the Apple event came and went without announcement of a new iPhone OS.  By the same token, I was intrigued by the iPad's user interface.  I remember thinking "when are we going to see this on the iPhone?"  It's definitely not official, but a YouTube video provides instructions for how to transport the OS over to your iPhone.  You'll need a jailbroken iPhone, Cydia, and a few minutes to watch the video.  It's neat and all, but be sure to check out the battery levels through the video - the results are quite interesting.

As always, installation of things like this are done at your own risk.  Are you willing to take the plunge?  Hit the video for more information!

    Motorola Devour box

Before you get excited, the box that you see above is most likely a Verizon Wireless promotional box containing Motorola Devour dummy phones and literature.  That being said, the fact that the stores are receiving these is an indicator that the Devour's launch is very close.  Looks like the device is packing an optical trackpad, and MOTOBLUR is present on the unit.

As it stands, there's no information on pricing or availability at the moment.  With informational packets arriving at the stores, could we see a launch in the coming weeks?

As the designated person to announce the nominees for Song of the Year, you have to be cool.  And what better way to present than using an Apple iPad?  In typical Steven Colbert fashion, he pulled the device out of his suit and said "Jay Z, did you not get one of these in your gift bag? Am I cooler than you?"

Nice product placement, Apple.  Where will we see the device next?

Virgin MobileVirgin Media’s upcoming bundle will traumatise teenagers: they’re offering unlimited landline calls to mobile phones.  Of course both phones have to be Virgin, making this an “all-or-nothing” deal designed to take over your entire array of phones. While it’s advertised with all kinds of advantages, it’s obvious that this is meant to make money off worried mothers.  The most common combination of “has a landline” and “wants to call mobile phones really frequently” is worried parents, constantly checking up on their precious snowflake (while said snowflake has a phone of their own and is out late at an unknown location.)  But the first few conversations on the new connection could be strained by how the parent forced the kid to replace their phone with a Virgin model.

The deal will definitely attract concerned customers, and also lead to a surge in voice messages throughout the UK.  But, it doesn’t matter how cheaply or often a parent phones a child - they have caller ID, and it’s still up to them if they want to answer.

Samsung’s currently working overtime to gain territory in the low-end touchscreen market. After immense success with the Genio, the Koreans look set to release yet another middle of the road dominator. Daily Mobile has come across the latest Samsung trooper, the Monte and it looks as though it may almost be ready to hit the front line.

Recent mug shots and specs have been passed around and well, it would be rude not to…

The Samsung Monte or S5620 will support GSM/3G with HSDPA and carry 200MB of internal memory. There’s a microSD slot for a storage injection and 3.5mm jack. GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth all feature and as expected Touchwiz OS is in there too. There’s no word yet on camera specs but we do know there’s a WQVGA 3.0″ touchscreen display.

Rumour has it the Samsung Monte will make an official appearance at MWC, with an expected release sometime in March.

Samsung Galaxy 2In two weeks time, Mobile World Congress, the most important mobile phone show of the year starts in Barcelona and here we have one of the first new product leaks ahead of that time.  Samsung is the manufacturer in question and the phone is the Android-based Galaxy 2.

For once, we have a relatively comprehensive feature list too:

    • 3.7″ AMOLED touchscreen.
    • Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor.
    • A 5 megapixel camera.
    • GPS.
    • Wi-Fi and 3G.
    • 32GB Internal memory.

Add to this the fact the Galaxy 2 will be running version 2.1 of Android and we have a pretty familiar set of specifications.  Yes, this new Android phone is another ’superphone’ designed to take on the likes of the Google Nexus One and the currently unreleased HTC Bravo and the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.  The case design is also reminiscent of the Nexus One and in the renders you can see various side-mounted controls along with a 3.5mm jack plug.

The story doesn’t end there however, as there is also the possibility the Galaxy 2 will not run Qualcomm’s speedy Snapdragon processor, but the Samsung Hummingbird ARM Cortex A8, another 1GHz monster, instead - an interesting development and one with the potential to really make the next wave of Samsung smartphones standout.  We’re expecting the Galaxy 2 to make an appearance at MWC, with a rumoured release date of Q2 2010.

Text MessageIt’s sometimes difficult to believe that a service which initially failed to catch on could become so widely used.  When SMS was introduced back in the mid-90s, very few messages were sent as the take-up of 2G GSM mobile phones was slow.  In fact, I recall selling phones such as the Motorola 7200 and discussing the benefits of digital over analogue, of which SMS was one, and almost no-one caring!  ‘Surely voice is the future of communication,’ I would hear, ‘and not a message limited to 140 characters?’

The Mobile Data Association’s latest report paints a very different picture to the indifference seen at its launch, as they quote a total of 96.8 billion SMS messages were sent during 2009 in the UK alone!  This figure is up from 2008’s total of 78 billion and up again over the 56 billion sent in 2007.

The report also shares some Christmas Day and New Years Eve 2009 figures.  A mere 441 million messages were sent on the 25th of December, a drop in the ocean compared to the 874 million sent on over New Years Eve and Day!  The average 265 million sent each day puts these figures into perspective.

Do you use SMS as an alternative to calling someone?  Is it the cost, the simplicity or the convenience that makes you do this, or another reason entirely?  Let us know in the comments!
