If you’re a BlackBerry addict, you may have come across the White Screen of Death – this normally comes about after prolonged use, without turning the phone off. You’ll soon know if you’ve got the WSOD, the phone will lock up and the screen will go completely white, bar one tiny error message. Basically, this message means that your beloved handset has died a little inside. If this has happened to you and you can’t get it to pull back to the land of the living or it keeps happening then fear not because we have a nifty defibrillator on hand to kick start your failing Blackberry.

The only remedy for the WSOD currently, is to turn the handset off and take out the battery. Leave it for a couple of minutes before putting it back in and rebooting. Don’t worry if it takes a while to re-start it’s recovering, and will be back to normal in no time, normally three minutes or so.

If you’ve got a hard case on your BlackBerry handset, it can be difficult to get it off and the battery out, if this is the case there are applications dedicated to ‘battery pulling’ and will replicate the action of removing the battery without physically doing so. However, this doesn’t work every time so the best thing to do is manually extract your battery from the phone.

In the mean time, the only way to stop this from happening is to regularly take out the battery or run the battery pull app – about twice a month should do it. That should keep you going until BlackBerry can find a permanent fix.

Nokia’s Comes With Music service is a great tool to get unlimited track downloads for free. Once you’ve bought your CWM handset you can download and play any music from the Nokia store – which has millions of tracks and artists. You can get 12, 18 and 24month licenses, giving you plenty of time to stock up on tunes legally! Once the subscription period is over, you can still download tracks but you’ll have to start paying for them on a pay per song basis- similar to iTunes. Alternatively you could get another license, but to do that you need to buy a new CWM handset. One final point to note, because of strict DRM management, once tracks are downloaded, they are only playable on your registered CWM device and computer, no CD burning, MP3 loading or sharing with friends. Having said that, it’s still a pretty good feature to have, giving you free range across Nokia’s entire music store.

So hopefully you understand the ins and outs of the Service itself, now onto how to access it. There are two ways this can be done, via your computer, or straight from your phone if you can access the web.

    Computing it:

    • When you first open the box to your new Nokia phone, you should find a Comes With Music leaflet and disc. Open up the leaflet to find the unique PIN and get the Disc in your computer.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to install Nokia Music and accept any updates that pop up.
    • Now you need to get your phone and computer to talk. Using the USB cable supplied hook up your new device to your computer. A menu will appear on the phone, with one of the following options, Media Player, Printing and Media, Media Transfer.
    • Click whichever Media option pops up and launch Nokia Music on the computer. Head to the store tab and click on Join Now. You’ll be asked to create a username and password, or enter your existing details if you already have a Nokia account.
    • Once you’ve Joined up / Signed in you will be asked for the activation PIN that was in the leaflet. Type it in the box and hit enter. You can now pick tracks and download them to your computer and phone for free.

    Trouble Downloading?

If you’re having trouble downloading to your computer, you can always re-download tracks by simply going to the CWM site> My Account> Music Vault> and click on Download. Before re-downloading, you will need to delete cookies from your browser.

    • To do this go to Tools>Internet Options>General>Delete Cookies & Delete Files.

    Phoning it:

    • Find the activation leaflet in the box as before and get the PIN.
    • From the main menu, go to the Music folder on your phone and open up the Nokia Music application.
    • You’ll now need to connect to the web, choose an appropriate access point – either WLAN or an operators browser.
    • Nokia Music will open up, from here follow the same instructions as before- Click on Join Now and enter your details. Submit the activation code to start your membership. If you want to transfer tracks to your PC you can do this via the USB cable at a later date.

O2 and Vodafone are threatening to delay 4G in the UK until they get what they want. Since both want the same thing, that could be a bit of a problem.  The government is trying to pass legislation to allow an auction of next-generation bandwidth by the end of the month – but because the two phone companies don’t like it they’re readying a “judicial review.”  Aka “We’ll spend money to stop this for as long as we have to.

Their consternation comes from the recent combination of Orange and T-Mobile, which the European Commission forced to sell 25% of its 1800 MHz spectrum to avoid monopoly issues. Orange/T-Mobile said “sure”, but they want to sell it all in one chunk.  This means either O2 or Vodafone will end up with a significant advantage, and rather than spend more money to get that they’d rather spend less to jam the gears of progress with legal paperwork.

Luckily those gears, in this case the UK Department for Business (overseeing the auction on behalf of the European Commission) said they have no intention of stalling the spectrum sale to save phone companies some money.

Did you know that you can take screenshots with your iPhone at any time? You can capture the image that is on your screen for the purpose of sharing it with others via email or a blog post. This is something that you can do on many smartphones if you use the right apps but it’s a feature that’s built in to the iPhone and is super easy to use.

Here is how to take a screenshot with your iPhone:

    • Go to the screen that you want to capture.
    • Locate the “home” and “sleep” buttons on your iPhone handset.
    • Press both of these buttons at the same time, holding them down until you see the screen flash white.

That’s all that you need to do. Now you can go to your photos and look through your camera roll. Your screenshot will be there. Share or post the screenshot as you would with any other image in your photos.

Remember the Touch Pro2? The great looking, side-sliding QWERTY keyboard business phone? Well, it’s coming up to a year old and according to a new rumour, its replacement will be hitting European shores before the end of 2010.

Inevitably set to be named the Touch Pro3, the leak comes from a member of the XDA Developers site claiming to be in touch with ‘a main distributor for HTC’, who said the new phone would be coming into stock by summer, ready for a Q3 2010 release.  The handset was described as being smaller than the Pro2 and most likely to run Windows 6.5.

The phone has also been linked to the previously leaked HTC Tera, which in rendered picture form closely resembles the Touch Pro series. As the Pro2’s one-year anniversary gets closer, an update isn’t unlikely and as these things are planned for a good while before announcement, we would imagine that the Pro3 missed the window for being developed as a Windows Phone 7 candidate.

Unfortunate as this is, the Pro3’s obvious business credentials do make the choice of 6.5 over the more commercial Windows Phone 7 OS a sensible one.  Like it or not, WinMo 6.5 still has legs in the right environment, and the Pro3 offers exactly that.

The Google Nexus One is an exciting mobile phone, with a brilliant specification, Google branding and the bonus of being completely unlocked from purchase.  It has been available in the USA for several months, and while eager UK prospective owners could pay the postage and import charges to get the phone here, most were happy to wait for the official release.

Well, it’s looking like they’ll have to wait a little longer, as the Nexus One’s arrival in the UK has been pushed back to mid-April at the earliest.  Vodafone are set to carry the Nexus One and have yet to provide tariff details for the phone, which makes us wonder whether the finer points are still being discussed, hence the delay.

It’s not good news though, as the longer the Nexus One is left in limbo, the worse it will likely do.  Quite aside from the fact we should be able to by the HTC Desire and the HTC Legend by then – don’t forget the Desire carries almost exactly the same specification – April will be Apple iPad month, and it will be a brave manufacturer who launches a connected device during that time!  Besides, didn’t anyone pay attention to the Palm Pre’s dismal European launch?  We had all moved on by the time it arrived!

Delay it further at your own peril Vodafone and Google.
