Enjoy our roundup of some of the best mobile phone stories that you may have missed this week:1. Mobile Data Passes Voice in Usage Study.
Carried out by Ericsson, a study of network traffic for December 2009 showed that mobile data usage was higher than voice traffic on a global scale. Ericsson continue to add that demand for mobile data has increased by 280% each year for the last two and that this is likely to double again during the next five. Social networking is quoted as being a major reason for the increase.
2. Dell Aero Details Released.
Heading to AT&T in the USA, this is Dell’s first Android smartphone. The Aero will have a 3.5″ touchscreen, a 5megapixel camera, GPS and plenty of social networking integration. There has been no confirmation of its release date or whether the Aero will make the jump to other regions in the world.
3. Motorola Devour Released.
Another currently US-only phone is the Motorola Devour, an unusual looking QWERTY phone which has just been released with Verizon. The phone has an aluminium body, MOTOBLUR, GPS and a 3.1″ touchscreen to display its Android OS.
4. Nokia Goes Purple.
Nokia are ready to release a purple version of their E72 business phone in an attempt to woo female BlackBerry users away from their devices. The phone is being promoted by business woman Karen Brady and Savannah Miller, founder of fashion label Twenty8Twelve. The Amethyst Purple E72 should be out soon.
5. More N900 Hacking Fun!
Niko is a Twitter-controlled robot that follows commands tweeted at him by his followers. Built from Lego and run by a Nokia N900, he even takes pictures of the things he bumps into! Take a look at the video.
6. iPhone Takes on Gaming Market in US.
Part of the iPhone’s success lies in its gaming ability, something which has been confirmed by analysts Flurry in a new study. They show that between 2008 and 2009, the share of the US gaming market controlled by the iPhone grew from 1% to 5% and the software revenue figures jumped from 5% to 19%.
7. Two New LG Phones at CTIA.
LG have been nothing but prolific since New Year, and now we have the Cosmos and Remarq to add to the list of low-to-middle-range 2010 handsets. The Cosmos is a strange little slider with a 1.3megapixel camera and GPS, while the Remarq is a candybar with a similar spec but more ‘eco-friendly’ approach.
8. Robots Tell Us Who’s Best.
In terms of touchscreens anyway! An independent test used a specially programmed robotic arm to show which of the current crop of top-touchscreen phones was the most responsive. The iPhone came out best, with the Nexus One second and the Motorola Droid in third place.
9. iPhone to Get Opera Mini?
iPhone owners are waiting to hear whether Apple will accept the popular Opera Mini browser into the App Store, following Opera’s submission of their iPhone-specific app earlier this week. Opera Mini for the iPhone was demoed at Mobile World Congress, but there are no guarantees it will be approved.
10. It’s Not a Phone!
With a 5″ rotating screen, a QWERTY keyboard, a Linux OS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a tiny clamshell design, this should sound exactly like a laptop to you. But it also has 3G and is called a BPhone. No, we’re sorry, but it’s just not a phone, no matter what you call it.
