    Samsung Acclaim 1

The Android revolution has worked its way through the nationwide carriers, but regional carriers - who are notoriously slow adopters - have been reluctant to jump on the bandwagon.  Over the past few months, US Cellular has entered the fray with plans to carry three Android devices (Samsung Acclaim, HTC Desire, and Samsung Galaxy S) by the end of the year.  The Acclaim hit retail stores on July 9th as their first Android device, and after working with it today, I find it to be a nice little mid-range phone.

With its 800 MHz processor, 3.2-inch display, and stock build of Android 2.1, the Acclaim reminds me a lot of the Samsung Moment with Sprint.  That being said, it trades in the Moment's bulky, block-like look with a clean, curved shape that resembles the Samsung Intercept.  Though it packs a full QWERTY keyboard, the Acclaim is a reasonably sized device.  Coming in at 4.49 inches long by 2.32 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick and tipping the scales at 4.93 ounces, it fits in a pocket with ease.

You'll find a volume rocker and microSD card slot (with support for up to 32 GB) on the left side, and the microUSB charging port and camera shortcut button on the right.  The power button and 3.5mm headphone jack are on the top, and the camera and speakerphone are on the back.  Sure, I'm spoiled by the AMOLED displays out there, but I have a soft spot in my heart for devices with 3.2-inch displays.  Like the 3.7-inch units out there, it's a fantastic balance between small and the 4+-inch behemoths on the market.

    Samsung Acclaim 2

The Acclaim offers the standard version of Android 2.1, and though I've become fond of custom software like Sense UI, TouchWiz, and MOTOBLUR, it has been a pleasure to deal with vanilla Android again.  Like other mid-range Android devices out there (Ally and Intercept come to mind), the Acclaim sports a full QWERTY keyboard.  The keys are tactile, large, and easy to use, and I had fully adjusted to using it by the end of the day.  As I've said before, I prefer an extra row for the space bar and various symbols, but it's personal preference.  For touchscreen-only fans, the standard Android on-screen keyboard is also included.

    Samsung Acclaim 3

The Acclaim offers a 3-megapixel camera, so as you would expect, picture quality isn't the greatest in the world.  Images are slightly blurry thanks to the lack of autofocus and colors are somewhat washed out, but it's decent enough for the occasional snapshot.  A flash is included, and the Acclaim offers the ability to adjust white balance, color effect, picture size, picture quality, and focus mode.  Video quality is good for a quick MMS or casual recording, but I wouldn't use it on a daily basis.

I won't comment on call quality or data speeds since I'm not in a US Cellular native coverage area (I will be this weekend - stay tuned for those numbers in the full review), but the earpiece has been sufficiently loud in all of my test calls.  I was also able to pair a Bluetooth headset to the device with ease.  The Acclaim supports EVDO Rev. A connectivity, so I'm sure data speeds will be good.

The Acclaim offers a 1,500 mAh battery with estimated talk time of 8 hours, and 19 days of standby time.  I'm still working with battery life numbers, but the Acclaim appears to be on par with other Android devices.  With moderate use encompassing calling, messaging, e-mailing, downloading apps from the Android Market, I was able to make it about 10 1/2 hours before the device powered down.  Keep in mind that the device is roaming 100 percent of the time, so battery life numbers should improve once I'm in a US Cellular coverage area.

The Acclaim is available now for $99.95 after mail-in rebate and two-year agreement at US Cellular.  Stay tuned - the full review is on the way!

    Motorola Droid

One year ago, Motorola was not in the greatest position in the market.  They had produced several products that had not managed to match the success of their mega-popular RAZR.  Fast forward to today, and Moto is in quite the opposite position.  Today the company announced that their earnings for Q2 reached $162 million, compared to $26 million just one year ago.  Moto estimates that it shipped 8.3 million phones in Q2, 2.7 million of which were smartphones.  Much of Motorola's success can be attributed to the DROID, quite possibly the most popular Android device to date.

The DROID definitely helped to bring Motorola back from the brink, and now they company is stronger than before.  They just released the DROID X on Verizon, which seems to be doing rather well, and it is expected that the DROID 2 will drop some time next month.  Considering the success of the original DROID, I'm sure we'll see strong sales of its improved successor, as well.  Keep up the good work, Moto!

Aaron takes a look at the Samsung Acclaim, US Cellular's first Android device. With an 800 MHz processor, 3.2-inch display, Android 2.1, and a full QWERTY keyboard, it's a nice mid-range phone.

    HTC EVO Android 2.2

Owners of HTC's EVO 4G, like every other Android owner, have been anxiously wondering when Android 2.2 will be coming to their superphone.  If a recent leak is true, they won't be waiting much longer.  Engadget has received photos of some internal Sprint documents stating that Froyo could start hitting some handsets starting tomorrow, with a wider, more official roll out starting the week of August 1st (aka next week).  This news is great all on its own, but the documents go on to explain that EVO owners will be receiving a number of improvements and new features with the update, as well.  The new features will include several new widgets, revamped interfaces for some apps, and the ability to use the camera LED as a flashlight, among other additions.  The quality of 720p video recording will also be enhanced, and it sounds like the 4G hotspot hack that some users have taken advantage of will also be patched up.

Dates like this can always change at the last second, so don't be disappointed if nothing happens with your EVO tomorrow, but the documents look solid.  The update is "high priority for competitive reasons," which sounds like Sprint is starting to feel some of the heat from Verizon's DROID X launch.  If everything goes smoothly, Froyo will "be available on client-initiation on Friday afternoon" at "12:00 PM CST," with Sprint and HTC pushing out the notification of new software to all users starting "Tuesday 8/2."  The document says that Sprint will be making an announcement tomorrow morning, so check back with PhoneDog to find out what's up.

    HTC EVO Android 2.2

UPDATE: Sprint has confirmed that Android 2.2 will begin rolling out to EVOs starting Tuesday, August 3rd!  Users will begin receiving notifications of the update starting then, but if you just can't wait (and why would you want to?), you can just hit Software Update on your EVO and initiate the download that way.  See the full press release below.

Sprint is the first wireless carrier to bring Android 2.2 to customers using the award-winning HTC EVO™ 4G beginning Tuesday, Aug. 3

Android 2.2 offers HTC EVO 4G feature enhancements including Bluetooth® voice dialing, built-in Flash, the ability to store apps to the memory card and much, much more

The award-winning HTC EVO 4G just got that much better. We are excited to announce that beginning the week of Aug. 1; Sprint will begin rolling out the Android 2.2 upgrade to its HTC EVO 4G customers.

Sprint will be the first wireless carrier to bring1 the latest version of Android to its customers. The Android 2.2 software release provides a significant number of feature enhancements, including:
    •    Voice Dialing Over Bluetooth.
    •    Application Storage on External Memory, giving users more storage room for all their apps.
    •    Camera 4-way rotation allows the camera icons to rotate with the camera.
    •    Improved Browser Performance including a faster JavaScript engine and Flash 10x Support improving the user's ability to view videos and available content associated with web pages.

"Sprint is thrilled with our customers' response to HTC EVO 4G and the innovative and exciting experience it offers," said Fared Adib, vice president – Product Development for Sprint. "It is exciting for us to lead the industry in bringing the Android 2.2 update to these customers and improve on the amazing experience they receive with America's first 4G capable phone."

    Easy Downloading
Sprint will begin sending update notifications to users in waves beginning Tuesday, Aug. 3 and the upgrade should be available for all HTC EVO 4G users by the middle of August.

The notification will let the users know that the update is available and it will provide the simple two-step over-the-air download process.

    1.    Users will receive a notification that Android 2.2 is available for download.
    2.    Once the user has downloaded the update, they will be prompted to install the update. The user will be notified that their device will be disabled during the installation process. The phone will be ready to use once the process completes.

For those who just can't wait to get Android 2.2, there will be an easy user initiated option to download the upgrade. Customers can access the software update through their HTC EVO 4G under the Settings Menu System Updates HTC Software Update. This will initiate the three-step process also.

Rave Reviews and Accolades for EVO
Check out what the top tech reviewers are saying about the device.
Walt Mossberg with the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) says:

"The HTC EVO 4G, when used on Sprint's 4G network, offers the highest consistent downstream data speeds I have ever seen on a cellular network. It also has a number of other strong features: a front-facing camera for video chatting, and the ability to serve as a Wi-Fi hotspot (for an extra fee of $30 a month) that can simultaneously connect up to eight laptops or other devices to the Internet."

    Chris Ziegler with Engadget says:

"Let us be crystal clear: we love this phone. Nay, we adore it. ...truly one of the best smartphones ever made..."

Sascha Segan with PC Magazine says:

"...if you live online, the EVO offers a big, beautiful, and powerful window to the world."

"The EVO starts with a world-class 3G smartphone and adds 4G as a "turbo boost" option. If you're an intensive Web user, you'll like it even without 4G."

    Bonnie Cha with CNET says:

"Overall, the HTC Evo 4G is, hands-down, the best smartphone that Sprint has to offer and certainly ranks as one of the best Android phones on the market today."

Jessica Mintz with the Associated Press says:

"HTC's Evo 4G phone is fast, powerful and fun to use - as long as your heart isn't set on tapping into the speedier new network it was designed for."

Mark Spoonauer with Laptop Magazine says:

"Even if 4G hasn't yet reached your neck of the woods, the Evo 4G is a killer device thanks to its zippy processor, huge display, and an interface that makes Android more intuitive and user-friendly. While the keyboard could be better and the battery life longer, the Evo 4G richly deserves our Editors' Choice award. It's a no-brainer for Sprint customers, and a tempting choice for those on other carriers."

    Matt Buchannan with Gizmodo says:

"It's actually staggering how different the experience is of using a phone that has over 4 inches of display, diagonally, versus more conventional screens, which run closer to 3.5 inches. Even when you're using the same OS at the same resolution-in this case, Android 2.1 with HTC's Sense UI at 800x480, seen on their last few Android phones.

It's kind of like when the jeans you've been wearing forever start to fit a little too snugly because you've been eating a little too well, and you finally cave and buy a bigger pair of jeans, there's a mindblowing moment when you close the button for the first time of how much freedom you suddenly have to breathe. So you kind of hyperventilate."

CNET, LAPTOP Magazine and eWeek gave HTC EVO 4G awards for Best of Show when it was announced at CTIA this spring. It was also recently cited on MobileTechReview's Best Smartphones and Best Touch Screen Phones lists.

Customer favorites on HTC EVO 4G's long list of features include the 4.3-inch screen, dual 8MP video camera capable of capturing HD quality and front-facing 1.3MP camera. They also appreciate the HDMI output jack making it simple to start a movie for your children in the backseat of the car with the phone and then connect to an HDTV to finish it when you arrive at home.2 Business customers highlight its super-fast 1GHz processor, simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G or Wi-Fi coverage areas enabling Web surfing and more during conversation, and built-in mobile hotspot for up to eight Wi-Fi enabled devices.3 For HTC EVO 4G images visit Sprint's image gallery.

Amazing at 3G, Unbelievable at 4G
Sprint is the first national carrier offering the next generation of broadband technology today in 43 markets. Sprint 4G delivers download speeds up to 10 times faster than 3G from any other wireless carrier4, giving HTC EVO 4G a faster data speeds than any U.S. wireless device available today. HTC EVO 4G's exciting features and applications are compelling and powerful in a 3G world, but they become even more amazing when experienced with 4G speeds.

    Verizon LTE USB modem

We're all eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first LTE equipment to hit the scene some time later this year, and now we've got some images to whet our appetite until LTE finally launches.  Boy Genius Report has received a few photos from one of their tipsters showing off Verizon's first LTE USB modem.  The device is made by LG and is containing an LTE SIM card that Verizon customers will grow accustomed to as 4G continues to grow.  The modem looks like a finished product, so hopefully we'll be seeing it launch in the near future.

The modem in the photos looks like a finished product, but I imagine that Verizon still has some extensive testing to put it through before we can get our paws on the device.  We've heard in the past that Verizon's LTE will be going live in November, which gives Big Red plenty of time to work out the kinks on its modem and its network.  Are any of you going to pick up an LTE USB modem when they hit, or will you be waiting for LTE handsets before you indulge in 4G goodness?

    Droid 2 user guide

If you've got some time to kill and an interest in Motorola's upcoming Droid 2, have I got some news for you.  The device's full user guide has just been leaked to the good folks over at Droid-Life, and we've been able to gather some important details on the Droid 2 thanks to the leak.  The is-it-Blur-or-something-else skin found on the DROID X will also be making an appearance here, which is pretty disappointing to DROID 1 owners and users who love vanilla Android.  Second, we have the multitouch keyboard, another feature found on the DROID X, along with Swype pre-loaded.  Finally, it looks like the Droid 2 will, in fact, come with Android 2.2.  The search box seen in the user guide is similar to the one on 2.2, meaning the odds are good that Droid 2 customers will be getting a serving of Froyo with their purchase.  If you're interested in the full user guide, you can download the PDF right here.

I don't know about you, dear readers, but I'm a little bummed that the Droid 2 is launching with Moto's skin on top of Android.  Sure, some say it's an improvement over the MOTOBLUR skin, but I'd rather see no skin at all, like when the original DROID launch.  So after all of this new information, who's going to pick up a Droid 2 when it launches, possibly next month?

    myTouch 3G HD

In case you were worried that the myTouch 3G HD didn't have a back, I'm here to alleviate your concerns.  Our friends and heroes over at TmoNews have received a photo of the back of the device we saw yesterday, and it looks, well, like the back of a phone.  You can see the speaker grille, camera, myTouch logo, what will most likely be a dedicated camera button, and what could be a port on the bottom right of the photo, possibly for a Micro-USB connection.  In case you missed it, you can see the front of the device below.

Opinions on yesterday's photo of the myTouch 3G HD were mixed, and while I'm sure the back of the device won't change any opinions, it's always great to see more of a leaked device.  We may not be any closer to knowing whether or not this will be T-Mobile's first HSPA+ device, but I'm getting excited about the myTouch 3G HD.  I don't really need a physical keyboard, so the prospect of a myTouch 3G with a (presumably) larger screen and higher resolution is definitely interesting to me.

    Best Buy Connect

It was almost a month ago when we reported on Best Buy's mobile data service, titled Best Buy Connect.  The service offered a pretty good discount on hardware and good prices on 3G data, but now Connect has gotten much more interesting by offering 4G data.  Teaming up with Clearwire, Best Buy Connect will begin offering its customers access to 4G data in 2011, with service currently available dozens of cities and expected network growth in the future.  If you're interested in checking out 3G data from Best Buy Connect, you can find everything you need here.  The full press release can be seen below.

Offering its own 3G data service seems like a good move for a company like Best Buy, and now they are the first major wholesaler to offer 4G data.  Even though there was pricing info announced, I'm sure that the prices will be competitive considering their current 3G data pricing.

Best Buy® and Clearwire® Unveil Strategic Wholesale Relationship and Plans to Offer Newly Branded 4G Mobile Broadband Service in the U.S.

    •    Best Buy Becomes First Major Wholesaler, Outside of Clearwire’s Strategic Investors, to Join Clearwire’s 4G “Network of Networks” and Offer Service Under the Best Buy Name

    •    Best Buy ConnectSM Broadband Service to Offer New 4G Option

    •    Customers to Have Choice of Device and Plan That Best Fits Their Mobile Broadband Needs

MINNEAPOLIS and KIRKLAND, Wash. – July 29, 2010 – Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR), a leading provider of wireless broadband services and operator of the fastest 4G network in the country, and Best Buy Connect, LLC, a subsidiary of Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE: BBY) today announced the formation of a strategic wholesale relationship in which Best Buy will use Clearwire’s 4G network to offer mobile internet service to customers under the Best Buy Connect service.  Beginning in 2011, Best Buy will offer a new 4G tier for its recently introduced Best Buy Connect service.  Best Buy Connect was conceived to help accelerate mobile broadband adoption by providing consumers the convenience of one-stop shopping for devices, service activation, billing and customer support from Best Buy.

“Our strategic wholesale agreement with Clearwire will enable Best Buy Connect to leverage the Clearwire 4G network’s speed and bandwidth to deliver compelling new mobile broadband experiences for our customers,” said Jed Stillman, vice president of Best Buy Connect. “This agreement paves the way to providing one-stop shopping and support for mobile broadband as more people become more connected across all kinds of devices. We believe consumers will appreciate the added advantage of relying on Best Buy Connect for both 3G and 4G mobile broadband services beginning next year.”

“Best Buy is at the forefront of providing consumers with the best in consumer electronics products and services, and we are very proud to provide the mobile broadband network that will enable them to offer their own branded 4G service to their broad customer base,” said Teresa Elder, president of strategic partnerships and wholesale at Clearwire. “This new agreement is particularly strategic for our ‘network of networks’ business model. Not only is this one of the first major wholesale agreements beyond our group of strategic investors, but it also demonstrates the interest in our network from companies outside of traditional service providers. We look forward to supporting Best Buy in the months and years ahead.”

4G Coming to Best Buy Connect
Best Buy Connect will offer its customers 4G service options that use the Clearwire network currently available in dozens of cities across the United States, with network coverage expected to continue to expand.

Best Buy Connect joins a growing portfolio of exclusive branded content, connections and services that deliver the advantages of what Best Buy calls the “connected world” easily and seamlessly to consumers. Additional details can be found at www.bestbuy.com/bestbuyconnect.  Detailed company information about Clearwire is available at http://www.clearwire.com.
